There are several departments in India which is more corrupt than the police department.
But why Indian’s feared of police department? They trained to respect law’s and enforced the law in the best they can but why people have not faith in the system?
According to the data Since Independence 1947 the 34,844 police personnel from all the central and state police force died in the line of duty. The police are also the most recognizable face of the State and a police station is invariably a citizen’s first point of contact in an hour of crisis.

Let’s Understand the fact and figures first
The below figures are taken from (status of policing Report 2019 By Common cause and CSDS)
· The police in India works at 77 percent of its sanctioned strength, or just 3/4th of its required capacity.
· Vacancies in the senior ranks are higher than vacancies at the constabulary ranks.
· SCs, STs, OBCs and women are less likely to be recruited/posted at officer-level ranks than general police personnel.
· Premature transfers are higher during election years in the States. Especially in UP and Bihar.
infrastructural facilities
· Some of the police station in India not even have drinking water facilities, and public seating areas.
· Availability of government vehicle, technological and digital equipment are very poor.
Mental and work stress
Indian police personnel are stretched and stressed.
According to the survey the Indian police works 14-16 hour a day, some of the polish personnel experienced mental and physical stress.
Case load
the load of investigation of cases, forms a major part of the workload of the police personnel. The high work load on personnel results in poor investigation, corruption and court delay etc.
External Pressure
In some cases, involving influential people, police are more likely to face pressure from politicians. the police personnel’s have to face consequences like Dismissal, suspension, transfer if they not comply with the pressure,
The external pressure includes
· Pressure from senior personnel
· Human rights pressure
· Media coverage
“India’s super-structure of economic prosperity is built on a weak base of an ineffective and outdated criminal justice system.”
—Former DGP and Chairman Indian Police Foundation, Prakash Singh (January 2019)
Incidents of police brutality are common across India. From custodial deaths in Kerala to encounter killings in Uttar Pradesh, where the Chief Minister Yogi Aditya Nath reportedly said that ‘Agar apradh karenge, toh thok diye jaayenge,’ which is a euphemism for fake police encounters or an endorsement of unjust police violence. Even registering of FIR is refused by personnel’s just because of the myth that FIR is indicator of increasing crimes.
Not all police personnel are corrupt. even after facing so many external’s and eternal challenges police officer’s like Hemant Karkare, Vijay salaskar , Ashoke kamte are the best example of bravery and selflessness. Many officers work responsibly 24*7 for public and deserve the same respect as military officers of the country.
